What is the estimated life span of a Plasma TV?
Flat panel display manufacturers claim a plasma TV theoretical life expectancy of anything between 60,000 and 100,000 hours for their sets, though the actual will be dependant very much on how the screen was used (ie. Brightness, screen burn etc.). However it is important to note that this is a "half life" value which means at the approximated time, the brightness will be half of the original when you first turned it on. The picture does not suddenly disappear rendering the screen useless. Thus if a good quality plasma rated at 60000 hours is well looked after it can be expected to run from between 15 and 30 years before any noticeable picture degradation occurs. The drop off in brightness is due to the method of creating colours by burning phosphor that plasma utilises.
What is the estimated life span of a LCD TV?
LCD TVs life span is typically 50,000-60,000 hours, which equates to at least 5 years of 24/7 use. LCD's lifespan limit is due to a backlight that is used to create the light source for a picture which eventually burns out. Unlike Plasma, the brightness of the backlight will typically remian constant for most of the life, and then rapidly decrease. These backlights are replaceable, but the expense of replacing one when the time comes may be greater then simply replacing the entire TV.
